In Retrospect...

Updated: Dec 17, 2018

Being a little kid in the '70's, I was exposed to the popular culture and society of the day. But I was way more intrigued by the preceding era—the '60's.

Coming home on the bus from school, I remember how ecstatic I'd get when I'd hear the theme music from "I Dream of Jeannie" at 4:00 sharp, followed by Bewitched, then Get Smart. Sure I watched those shows as a means of escapism, but it was more for the way everyone looked. The men were always beautifully dressed and groomed; the women had simple, chic dresses made from stiff fabrics, and high volume, elegant hairdos. Everyone dressed with class. I remember thinking to myself, at the time, why people didn't look (or want to look) like that anymore. It never occurred to me that times had changed, but all around me, there was a poor replacement, a polar opposite to the clean look of the early 60s; the unkempt hair, wide leg polyester pants, wide collars, the clownish platforms. It was in comparison, kitschy and unrefined.

The 1960's for me have been the catalyst for who I am, what my personal style is, and what kind of art I produce. More on that next time. #retroillustration, #retrodesign #fashionillustration #1960s #madmenera #60smod #getsmart #bewitched #idreamofjeannie #jetset #bookcover #bookcoverart #vintagefashion #early60s #cocktailparty #60smartini
